As noted yesterday, Netflix is pushing an award season run forSquid Game, its most successful show ever. This is pretty radical, for multiple reasons. The fact thatSquid Game,a show almost entirely in Korean, has become the most-watched television show in the world and also that this show could be contending for awards alongside the likes ofSuccessionandMare of Easttownand more –Parasitedid it on the film side a couple of years ago. And now the boundaries of western prestige television are being expanded too.

Squid Game’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and his cast attended the LACMA gala a few days ago. Last night he and the show’s three leads, Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, and Jung Ho-yeon were at a special screening event and Q&A in LA, 100% a campaign stop to amplify the series’ chances at PGA, Critics’ Choice, and SAG nominations.

燃烧的问题,当然,is whether or not they’ll be a second season. But I think we already know the answer to that question since Netflix will be enteringSquid Gamein the “drama series” category and not in the “limited series” category. Still, it’s good to get confirmation. And Hwang provided it last night:

If he’s only planning the story now, it’ll be a while yet – even with the speed of the South Korean production system. But it’s interesting to me that he says that “Gi-hun will come back, he’ll do something for the world”. Is that… optimism, LOL?Squid Gameisn’t exactly an optimistic show. It’s dark as f-ck! And the main draw ofSquid Game, as f-cked up as it is, is the actual game, just like, for example,饥饿游戏. The action was the arena, the audience wants to see the arena. Spoiler alert: we already know that Gi-hun gets off the plane (and left his daughter waiting for him on the other side), determined for revenge. So he’s going to try and burn it all down. From inside the game? When they know that he knows all about the game? There’s a lot to play with here. And so many more questions to be answered. For the thirstier ones among us, one of those questions is whether or not Wi Ha-jun will be back after falling over the cliff. He’s working on a new drama right now and couldn’t make it on the trip.

Jung Ho-yeon likely won’t be back for the second series but I can’t imagine her schedule will be open for long. Because it is inconceivable there is no way she’s not taking meeting after meeting right now in LA.Squid Gamewas basically her first acting role – and she killed it! Also… look at this face!
