After the success ofSquid Game, which is Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, it’s been an unofficial fact that there would be a second season. Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has been asked multiple times and he’s talked repeatedly about how he’s been thinking about the story and where he’ll take it. So this isn’t exactly a surprise. But Netflix formalised it this weekend with a short (terrifying) video and a statement from Dong-hyuk – thread below:

现在我要告诉你,我不想见到你g-hee’s f-cking boyfriend. Young-hee, for those of who’ve chosen not to remember (and I don’t blame you) is the giant robot doll that sings and kills. Young-hee is pure evil so her boyfriend, Cheol-su, will be just as bad if not an even bigger murderer with his own f-cked up theme song. And, I guess, Gi-hun will have to face him eventually?

Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, will be back. As will the Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hung. Gi-hun’s return is a given, since he was about to get on the plane and didn’t and obviously we all want to know whether or not he’s going to f-ck some sh-t up now that he knows more about the secrets of the game.

Similarly, since the Front Man was unmasked toward the end, of course we have questions. But what about Wi Ha-joon, who plays the detective who broke into the game to look for his brother only to discover that the Front Man was his brother? Did he die? Hwang Dong-hyuk is holding that information back for now.

What he’s teasing, though, is more facetime – or more SLAP-facetime – with “the man in the suit”, aka the Recruiter. Aka Gong Yoo, the actor who played him. Gong Yoo inspired a LOT Of slap-thirst online in the days and weeks afterSquid Gamepremiered. Including this EXCELLENT piece by Amanda Rosenberg:

All three of these actors, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hung, and Gong Yoo, are huge stars. But Gong Yoo is… well… he’s on another level of – I mean if you’re read Amanda’s article, you get the idea. He’s impregnated (virtually) an entire generation of Korean drama fans in their imaginations. Especially after the release of the series,Goblin, back in 2016/2017. It’s a supernatural rom-com involving a very hot, very well-dressed 939 immortal looking for his bride. People all over the world went bananas over him in this role – for me it was his hair. Here’s a compilation of all his looks on the show. For over five years I’ve been trying to get my husband to take inspiration from this.

Anyway, Gong Yoo doesn’t work often, he’s notoriously selective but he does have a strong relationship with Hwang Dong-hyuk having collaborated with him on a film in 2011 calledSilenced, based on the true story of the abuse that took place at a school for deaf children in South Korea. That film resulted in so much outrage they were able to change national legislation to protect people with disabilities and children.

What I’m trying to tell you is you should be prepared for more Gong Yoo in season two ofSquid Game.He was onscreen for basically five minutes in season one and there was a horny meltdown. Can you imagine if there’s even more?
