Earlier this summer, we learned that ID channel and Discovery+ (the “girls only” side of streaming, apparently) were making a true crime documentary calledHouse of Hammer,对各种违法行为失调的哈mmer family, which includes Armie Hammer. Of the series’ potential,I said:I’m not sure I trust an ID special to clean that up and find the humanist angle amidst all the tawdry details.A trailer has now dropped forHouse of Hammer, and it looks marginally less tawdry than I expected. I appreciate that two of Hammer’s survivors, Courtney Vucekovich and Julia Morrison, appear on screen and are given a chance to tell their stories in their own words. Amidst all the cannibal jokes and schadenfreude, it is important to remember that people were hurt, and part of the process must be allowing those people the space and opportunities to heal, including speaking to their own experiences publicly, if they so choose.

Speaking of cannibal jokes, though. On the same day the trailer forHouse of Hammerdropped, so didthe teaserfor Timothee Chalamet’s new movie with Luca Guadagnino,Bones & All. Timmy did a tweet about it, and the jokes rolled in.

What TIMING! I mean, it’s equally possible a future version of Timothee Chalamet has traveled back in time to warn us about the rising skeleton army and the Boney Wars of 2052, WE DON’T KNOW. But it IS curious that Chalamet and Guadagnino have reunited and instead of making aCall Me By Your Namesequel—probably tanked now that Hammer is thus disgraced—they have adapted Camille DeAngelis’ novel about teen cannibals in love. What do they know? Or is it all a genuine accident? Coincidence or conspiracy?

But back toHouse of Hammer. I’m not worried about Armie Hammer, he hasthe support of some very powerful peoplein the industry. At least, he does right now. Will that hold once there are faces put to the names of the women alleging that he abused them? I’m not saying he shouldn’t seek treatment or receive support while getting himself together, but I remain curious about what the other side of the fence looks like. Who is supporting the women harmed by him? Who is paying for THEIR therapy? Is anyone? Will having Courtney Vucekovich and Julia Morrison speak on the record in this way about what Hammer (allegedly) did to them make a difference in how the rehabilitation of Armie Hammer is handled? And I don’t mean “rehab” in the sense of substance abuse rehab, I mean the lowkey concerted effort to get this guy back into Hollywood.

Also, can we get through an entire “Armie Hammer cannibal documentary” without general kink-shaming of people into bondage and power dynamic play? There’s nothing inherently wrong with these things. What’s wrong is a person manipulating others into BDSM scenes they’re not actually ready, or willing, to perform. Hopefully we can get through a discussion of the allegations against Armie Hammer, and his family’s f-cked legacy, without shaming any and everyone who enjoys a little kink.
