Behold! A rare strike-era movie premiere appears. Not a festival premiere, but an actual, honest to goddess red carpet for a new film. Rebecca Miller’s new film,She Came To Me, has an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA, so the cast was able to attend the screening in New York last night. Stars Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei were there—Peter Dinklage was not, alas—and both wore SAG-AFTRA pins, as did many other people on the red carpet. Once again, these exemptions prove that people can “get back to work” if, you know, you pay them fairly for it.
Also present was Rebecca Miller and her husband, Daniel Day-Lewis. I know he’s retired and seems pretty happy about it, but just seeing DDL on a red carpet makes me long for a new DDL performance. We’ll have to settle for Joaquin Phoenix doing his best DDL impression, I guess.
Speaking of SAG-AFTRA, the actorsresumed negotiationswith the AMPTP this week. There is hope now that the WGA deal can be used as a blueprint that the strike will be resolved by the end of the month, so that hot labor summer doesn’t become cold labor winter. The SAG-AFTRA leadership has been encouraging members to continue picketing en force to show continued commitment to the cause and priorities of the strikes. Picket line stalwarts Krysten Ritter and Skeet Ulrich were back on the line in Los Angeles (technically Burbank but who admits to being in Burbank?). One thing these strikes have done is update me on celebrity friends. I did not know Krysten Ritter and Skeet Ulrich were friends,but they’re always picketing together.
