As Sarahwrote earlier today, it’s been one of the most unpredictable award seasons ever, because the usual metrics used by industry experts to predict how award season will look have been all over the place. No one could have predicted how the BAFTA nominations turned out which means that it’s probably just as useless trying to predict what might possibly happen when the Oscar nominations are announced.
Andrew Garfield, for example, was thought to be a solid bet for a Best Actor nomination for his performance intick, tick…BOOM!And since he’s British, well, most people assumed that he’d be in for sure with a BAFTA nomination but he didn’t make the cut. He was recognised by the Screen Actors Guild, though, so what does that mean for his Oscar chances? To echo Sarah’s sentiments – nobody knows! And that only makes Oscar nomination morning, which is next Tuesday, that much more suspenseful.
While it remains unknown whether or not Andrew will be invited to the Oscars,it was announced this weekthat he will be honoured by the Costume Designers Guild of America. Andrew will receive the CDGA spotlight award. Previous recipients include Oscar winners Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Oscar nominees Glenn Close and Naomi Watts. Most of the time, then, this honour is awarded to women. But it is intended to recognise any performer, no matter their gender “whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including special awareness of the role and importance of costume design”. After all, ever actor needs a costume. Per the CGDA press release:
“Andrew Garfield’s history with costume design has transcended genre. A tech giant, a decorated soldier, a superhero, and now, with his performances in The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick…Boom!, he has proven that he can do, and wear, just about anything.”
I love this. I love that a male artist’s relationship with his costumes is being appreciated, that clothes aren’t just the preoccupation of female artists. Because, again, every actor needs a costume. And trust me, from the stories I’ve heard on sets over the years, it’s not just the female actors who care about their costumes. The male actors care just as much, and pay just as much attention, can be just as fussy and particular, about their wardrobe as their female counterparts. Probably most of them just don’t want to admit it. Not Andrew Garfield though.
