Dear Gossips,

It was great to see Yalitza Aparicio last night at the first ever TIFF Tribute Gala. The event will now happen every year and, since TIFF is where Oscar campaigns begin, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg called it “the first awards ceremony of the long awards season”.

Last year, Yalitza was at TIFF with theRomateam.Romawould go on to receive ten Oscar nominations, including one for Yalitza, making her the first Indigenous woman to be nominated for Best Actress. You’ll recall, before being cast inRoma,Yalitza was preparing to be a teacher. Even during award season, when asked, she said she didn’t know whether or not she would continue acting. So I loved that she was at TIFF, being seen, continuing to be involved in the industry, hopefully taking meetings, creating opportunities. Because since the Oscars, we’ve not had much information about any upcoming acting projects and… well… that is some sh-t, non?

For most actors, an Oscar nomination is an open door to more work. That has not been the case for Yalitza – and I don’t have to tell you why except to say that talent is not the issue. More Yalitza, please.

Yours in gossip,
