Dear Gossips,

It is August 8, the 8th day of the 8th month, and in many East Asian cultures, today is considered the luckiest day of the year. Today also marks the 6th anniversary of the debut of BLACKPINK and to celebrate, they have confirmed their comeback which they’d already teased back in Maywhen they covered Rolling Stone.

Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé will release a new single, “Pink Venom”, on August 19. That’s the prelude to their new album,Born Pink, arriving in September. Today’s announcement also revealed that there will be a world tour starting in October.

As I mentioned when I posted about BLACKPINK and their Rolling Stone feature a few months ago, of course I can’t wait to hear the music, but I’m also really curious about the rollout.Born Pinkis coming two years afterTHE ALBUM,the group’s debut studio album in 2020. So this is only their second album in six years – not a typical timeline by K-pop’s productivity standards. That’s not to say that Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé haven’t been productive; they’ve each had their own successful solo projects – Lisa made history recently by becoming the first K-pop solo act to be nominated for an MTV VMA –but many fans have wondered in the pastwhy their label, YG Entertainment, doesn’t seemingly do enough to build on their massive popularity and generate more momentum with new material.

New material is now on the way and well-timed. In addition to Lisa’s VMA nomination, BLACKPINK also has a nomination in the Metaverse category…. and the VMAs are happening on August 28, just a few days after “Pink Venom” drops. It would be a big get for MTV if BLACKPINK was there to perform the song live and generating big buzz for the album.

MTV announced thefirst batch of performers last weekand the list includes J Balvin, Panic! at the Disco, Marshmello x Khalid, and also Anitta, the first Brazilian artist to be nominated. More performers are expected to be added in the coming days. Will BLACKPINK make an appearance?

Yours in gossip,
