The Invictus Games begin on Saturday in The Hague. Prince Harry was of course always planning to be there as the founder but the big question mark was whether or not Meghan Markle would join him – and it was confirmed yesterday that she will indeed be there at the start. So basically the Opening Ceremony and the first couple days of competition.

This is not a surprise. The Invictus Games celebrates those who have served, a showcase of how sport can heal, highlighting the courage and resilience of those wounded in duty – and the whole point is to amplify the athletes and their efforts. So if you have the platform that Harry and Meghan have, together, this is exactly where you want to lean into it, although someone, somewhere is going to be try and be mad about this, with the help of the British tabloids. And, naturally, had she stayed home, they’d be mad at her for not going and disrespecting veterans.

Anyway, this will be Meghan’s first official working trip outside the US since she and Harry moved their family to California. And this particular event has major significance in their relationship. Nearly five years ago, in September 2017, at the Invictus Games in 2017, is when Harry and Meghan premiered themselves after dating for about a year. And it wasn’t a hesitant break out of the gates – they came out full blast, holding hands in front of pretty much the entire world:

Remember that outfit? How that shirt and those jeans sold out? It was that shirt in particular, the “Husband Shirt”, is what it was called. A perfect fit on her, it really is a great shirt, but of course the extra meaning there is that they would announce their engagement about eight weeks later.

In other Invictus announcements, it was also BetterUp has been named as the “official mental fitness coaching tool of the Invictus Games Foundation”.

Harry is theChief Impact Officer at BetterUp, and that to me long-term is much more interesting than the expected announcement that Meghan is going to The Hague. We’re now starting to see the synergy happening between all of the Sussexes’ projects and this is not unusual for entrepreneurs, to build connections between various investments.

As Harry said in a statement:

“At its heart, the Invictus Games is about empowering every single person around the world. It’s a worldwide display of resilience, determination, and community for which each of us can draw inspiration. I couldn’t think of a better new partner for the Invictus Games Foundation than the mental fitness platform BetterUp. The mind is like a muscle: it needs to be honed, trained, rehabbed, and coached. The men and women I served with understand this, the Invictus community knows this, and now the world is beginning to see it too. I’m honored to bring the work we do at BetterUp to Invictus and look forward to expanding the support systems that service members and veterans depend on to achieve remarkable feats.”

Invictus is a charitable organisation, so is BetterUp doing this pro-bono because of Harry’s involvement with the exchange being that their profile is elevated by association with Invictus? And then with this exposure does BetterUp then build new business? That’s part of Harry’s job, to create new business for BetterUp so he’s checking of all kinds of boxes here, standard operating procedure for entrepreneurs. Which is what’s kinda new here – he IS an entrepreneur, he can be one now.
