The Sunreported yesterday that Andrew Garfield and Rita Ora are dating. They were both at the Evening Standard Awards a couple of weeks ago. Let’s break down how this story is being sold to us:
The singer, 28, is in the early stages of a relationship with the Hollywood star following her split from music producer Andrew Watt, 27, after 13 months in September.
Garfield, who played the lead in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and the sequel in 2014, romanced La La Land actress Emma Stone, 30, for four years until 2015.
A source close to the singer said: “Rita let slip to pals about her brewing romance about a month ago.
“But in recent days things have started to heat up and she says what they have is the real deal.
“It is still very early days but they like each other and are seeing what happens.
“Their schedules make things difficult but they have a real connection.”
“Let it slip to her pals”? The “let it slip” description could work in several ways here, non? Rita “let it slip” to her friends. And … does she mind that they “let it slip” to The Sun? If something is deliberate, does it count as a “slip”? Slips are usually inadvertent. I’m not convinced this was accidental.
Because celebrities do “let it slip” to people strategically to let us know what they want us to know. And, well, this is Rita Ora we’re talking about, or not talking about, which might actually be the point. I still can’t name one single Rita Ora song. She happens to have a new album out. I’ve scrolled past that headline. I have not heard any of the tracks. I have not heard anyone talking about any of the tracks. People are talking about Meek Mill’s album that dropped last night though. Nobody is talking about Rita Ora’s music.
The last time people talked aboutRita Ora, it was right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. And she was dragged for lip synching until John Legend defended her and said that they all had to lip synch for tech reasons. And now we’re finding out that she’s supposedly in the “early stages of a relationship” withAndrew Garfield. Coincidence or conspiracy?
The last time Andrew Garfield’s love life came up was back in Septemberwhen he was papped kissingactress Susie Abromeit on the beach in Malibu. After that it was radio silence. It was a weird set of photos, not super high res but not totally blurry either, and with enough lighting to make out their faces as they were making out. It seemed to be a while before Andrew caught on that it was happening but when he did, he didn’t look pissed about it.
Andrew’s not known for setting up pap shots though. He and Emma Stone tried to avoid it. Whatever was happening between him and Susie didn’t last. And now he’s being linked to Rita Ora who… well… may have a different approach to privacy than Emma. How does he feel about everyone knowing that he and Rita are dealing with each other?
