As I said earlier… the looks from last night’s Academy Museum Gala, if this is any indication of what we’re going to see when the awards really start up on January, they are going for it, making up for lost time in the most glamourous way. And especially so many of the actresses who are in contention.
It was thrilling to see Lily Gladstone in this orange Marni dress. Thrilling because it’s unusual, not boring, even provocative in its shape and how it’s tiered at the front. I know this is a polarising look, and that’s why I love it on her. Because she is one of the frontrunners for a Best Actress nomination and she’s not playing it safe. Which means she’s wearing what she likes, what she feels good in, what she finds interesting – and not dressing for mass appeal. That’s exactly the definition of personal style.
While Lily is almost a lock at this point for a nomination for her performance inKillers of the Flower Moon, very few of the experts are predicting that Greta Lee will make it in among the five nominees. Yes, it’s a very closely contested year, and sure,Past Livesis a smaller film compared to some of the others. But here’s my controversial opinion, and I will stand by it all season – if it were up to me, I’d take Greta over Margot Robbie inBarbie. Barbieis a good movie, and it will get its nominations, and Margot will get her nomination as a producer should it be nominated for Best Picture (and I think it will) but as far as the acting, I mean I’m not saying she wasn’t solid, but I just don’t think her acting was the standout in that film. Anyway, we still have four months to talk about this so we’ll save that for next year.
Back to Greta and her sublime red Loewe dress – and it has to be sublime when it’s a red dress for me because I never love a red dress but this one is really, really special with the off-the-shoulder detail and the sleeves… JW Anderson really loves her and you can tell, what she gets from Loewe is so beautifully suited to her. Also great to see Teo Yoo join her at the event as he was missingfrom the Gothams last week.
But how about Fantasia Barrino bringing all the drama to the Museum?! Her styling onThe Colour Purplepress tour has been blazing fire – and this outfit is all the things, the mesh, the sequins, the feathers, and somehow not too much because when your name is Fantasia, you can wear all the things and still be the star.

And finally, my best dressed of the night, an Oscar winner who is not currently in contention but who is always a winner on a red carpet… an angel in Chanel… Lupita Nyong’o. Girl. Single looks so f-cking good on you.
