Summer goes by fast, doesn’t it? Does it go by this fast for everyone? Like, have the last two months passed as quickly for Brock Turner as it has for the rest of us?
Today is August 2nd. Exactly two months since Brock Turner was sentenced to just 6 months in jail after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman by a dumpster. And exactly ONE MONTH until Brock Turner isscheduled to be releasedfrom jail after just 3 months, “barring bad behaviour”, which…come on, now… bad behaviour? Brock Turner’s already raped someone WHILE SHE WAS PASSED OUT and he’s only serving a short summer in prison for it. What could sweet, darling Brock Turner possibly do between now and September 2nd that would result in him not going home to his family, his nice, sweet, darling family, oh, and just in time for Labour Day long weekend! Maybe when he gets home, he’ll enjoy the taste of steak again.
Yesterday the judge who sentenced Brock Turner to 6 months in jailmade headlines againfor possibly showing preferential treatment to a male domestic abuser so that “he could keep his job”. He has a good job as an engineer in Silicon Valley. His name is Ming Hsuan Chiang and his attorney “downplayed the seriousness of the assault”,他说:“他们had a conflict, and my client from the very beginning acknowledged that he could’ve handled the situation better than he did. He let his emotions control him.”
So Brock Turner blames alcohol for raping an unconscious woman and Ming Hsuan Chiang gets to “downplay” beating the sh-t out his fiancée because he didn’t “handle the situation” better. Is this is a f-cking business deal? Or is it a case of two men not acknowledging the seriousness of their crimes against women and refusing to call them what they are? Rape and abuse. One is a rapist and one is an abuser and neither one of them has taken responsibility for it.
As the Stanford rape victimexplained in her impact statement, she was never initially interested in seeing Brock Turner “rot away in prison”. What she “truly wanted was for Brock to get it, to understand and admit to his wrongdoing”.
布鲁克·特纳and his parents and his supporters have collectively pointed the finger at drinking. Brock Turner’s father called what happened “20 minutes of action”。布鲁克·特纳also liedabout not having experience with drugs and alcohol before being negatively influenced by the “culture” of partying and drinking at Stanford. So we can have all kinds of discussions about how this judge f-cked up – and they are worthy conversations – but we should also not stop having discussions about how Brock Turner and Ming Hsuan Chiang f-cked up. About how both men have been done a disservice by the people around them in NOT being accountable about EXACTLY HOW they f-cked up.
So, yeah, it’s August 2nd. And in a month, Brock Turner, the rapist who won’t admit to being a rapist, and sees himself instead as a victim of “alcohol consumption and sexual promiscuity”, gets out. He gets out on a Friday. September 2 is a Friday. If it’s OK, I’ll remind you again that day: That Brock Turner is a rapist.
