Selena Gomez released her new song “Lose You To Love Me” last night. When Prem wrote about the rollout of thislast week, he noted that there were some hints that it would be a love song – and speculated if we’d be hearing about Justin Bieber or The Weeknd. Um, definitely Justin Bieber. She didn’t bother making it subtle in the lyrics. Here’s an example:

I saw the signs and I ignored it
Rose-colored glasses all distorted
Set fire to my purpose
And I let it burn

PURPOSE.

Here’s another:

I gave my all and they all know it
You turned me down and now it's showing
In two months, you replaced us
Like it was easy

Selena and Justin, you’ll recall, were together during the first three months of 2018. They broke up just after his birthday in the spring. By June he was back with Hailey Baldwin. A month after that they got engaged. The references here are unmistakable.

This is what Selena posted in the comments under the video:

“这首歌是inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album. I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself.”

The song is OK. I keep wanting it to swell but it doesn’t quite get there. I do, however, really like one lyric in particular:

Sang off-key in my chorus

This is so f-cking good, I wish I came up with it myself. It has the same DNA as“别打断我的磨!”But where Beyoncé’s throwing white hot flames, Selena’s dropping cool shade. The Queen’s anger is always superior, obviously, but Selena has nothing to be ashamed of with her contribution to the catalogue of song lyrics about the men who try to dim your shine. Why are you getting in the way of me setting this dance floor on fire? Why are you ruining my song?

As of post time, JB has yet to respond. But a lot of people think Hailey did. Here’s what she posted to IG stories right after Selena’s song dropped:

And then Selena posted this on her stories:

You can imagine what the fan reaction has been. For a certain generation, this is their Brange. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying that’s how intense it is.

I mean, sure, maybe Hailey didn’t know. Maybe it really was *just* a coincidence that she posted that slide just as everyone else on social was listening to Selena singing about how JB did her dirty. Coincidences are possible!

With these celebrities though? Really? Are they? The song isn’t even half a day old yet and already there’s this much drama. No complaints.
